Welcome to Santorini!
Santorini is one of the most well known Greek islands. It’s located in the cluster of islands called the Cyclades and is a 45 minute flight from Athens, Greece or a 5 hour ferry ride from Athens. It’s also connected to several other islands via ferry.
Santorini’s popularity grew after 1967 when the modern excavations began in Akrotiri, a prehistoric settlement from the 16th century BC. Akrotiri is known as the ‘Pompeii of Greece’ because it’s entirely preserved by volcanic ash.
Santorini has the famous blue & white domes you may have seen in photos of ‘Greece’ and the impressive views of the caldera from the villages high up on the cliff. Santorini is unlike any other Greek island because of these views.
Is Santorini too Touristy?
Yes and no. It’s true, Santorini is popular and well-loved, but for a good reason (see above)!
It’s a romantic destination and one we also love. The views cannot be beat and there is still so much beauty to see outside of the busy areas of the islands. During the peak of the summer, cruise ships visit often which crowds the tiny roads in the villages. It’s something to know and keep in mind during your travels. However, we always recommend staying in a property you love (we have many!) so you can enjoy the view from your balcony or common areas. Additionally, pre-planning & booking any activities is important in Santorini!
When is the best time to visit?
We recommend visiting during the ‘shoulder’ season April through the end of May and September – end of October.
