Greece is a magical country with beautiful landscapes, stunning nature, ancient history, and fun activities to do anytime of year you visit. Each season has pros and cons. We will provide you with a breakdown of each season, so you can decide when the best time to visit Greece is… for you!
We will start with the most popular time to visit Greece: summer! Summer is the classic time to visit Greece because the sun constantly shines, the days are long, and it is always hot, making for perfect conditions to be on a Greek island. The cool sea is the much needed escape from the heat. If you want to spend all your vacation days by the sea, then summer is a great time to visit.
However, the summer heat can make sightseeing a little unbearable. Hiking up to the Acropolis in 35 degree celsius heat is a sweaty mission. If you want to go to Greece to sightsee, we do not suggest a summer visit; the shoulder seasons – spring or fall – will be the best time for a sightseeing based vacation.
Summer is the high season in Greece, making prices at their highest. If you are traveling on a budget, we suggest the shoulder seasons. High season also brings maximum capacity, meaning everything will be booked. You need to prepare ahead of time with bookings and reservations. If you prefer less structure on a vacation or less crowds, the shoulder seasons will be your best option.
Spring is one of the most beautiful times to visit Greece. With everything in bloom, the landscape and foliage on both mainland and the islands are simply stunning with green and flowers everywhere. Just don’t forget your allergy meds. The weather is mostly sunny and warm – not too hot like in the summer – which makes for great sightseeing days as well as beach days. You will want layers of clothing for colder mornings and nights. You won’t be burdened by massive crowds or the heat in spring, however there is potential for rainy or cooler days that are not suitable for the beach. Beyond that, spring is a lovely time to visit Greece.
Fall is also an amazing time to visit Greece. It is similar to spring in that it is not too crowded or hot, yet the weather is still mostly suitable for some beach time during the day. It is also a great time to sightsee and even hit the mountains to catch the beautiful changing colors of the foliage.
At Eyia Retreats, we love hosting retreats in the shoulder seasons, especially May, September, and October. During shoulder seasons, we avoid high-season prices and the weather is still amazing. They are great months to go on retreat in Greece. If we host a retreat in summer, the location and time are very intentional so that it will not be over crowded with tourists.
Lastly, we cannot forget about winter. Everyone wants to visit Greece in the summer and go to the islands, understandably. However, going to Greece in the winter and spending time in a cozy mountain cabin with beautiful snow covered mountains and sea views is just as majestic as the Greek islands in the summer. You can take a cold plunge in the sea in the morning and go skiing or snowboarding in the afternoon.
