Why You Should Visit Athens When You Visit Greece - Eyia Retreats

I think we can all agree that the majestic beauty of the Greek islands is incomparable. Everyone in the world knows about Santorini and Mykonos, although those are just 2 of the thousands of Greek islands scattered amongst the Mediterranean. I don’t know of anyone who needs to be convinced to go visit a Greek island, but I do know of some that need convincing to visit Athens, the capital of Greece. I’m here today to make sure you also visit Athens when you visit Greece, at least for a couple of days, because it has everything to offer from ancient ruins and souvlaki to beautiful beaches and Michelin star restaurants.

When flying into Greece, you’ll usually fly into Athens airport first, which makes it easy to take a day or two or three in Athens at the beginning or end of your trip. It’s nice to have at least a couple days to adjust to the time change (if there is one), the climate, and the energy. Since you’re already flying into Athens, why not experience the ancient city?

There’s so much to see and do in Athens. Of course the number one attraction is the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum. Both are 100% worth the visit and exploration by foot. Visiting the parliament building to see the changing of the guards is also a popular attraction. It’s right next to the National Garden which is beautiful to take a stroll through and great for kids. There’s also the National Archaeological Museum, Benaki Museum, the National Gallery, the Roman Agora, Mount Lycabettus, Philoppapos Hill, the Panathenaic Stadium, Temple of Hephaestus, and Temple of Athena Nike to see and explore… just to name a few.

There are also so many unique neighborhoods to visit, walk through and explore, from the streets of Plaka – the picturesque area of Athens – to Monastiraki and its flea market, and Psyri neighborhood, Kolonaki neighborhood, and Adrianou street. You can take a car and drive all the way down the coast of the Attica region, the Athens Riviera, to explore the different sea-side neighborhoods as well as the beautiful beaches. The islands aren’t the only part of Greece that offers stunning beaches.

Beyond the ancient ruins and neighborhoods to explore, Athens also offers amazing shopping and dining experience from high-end shops and Michelin star restaurants to the local flea markets and delicious street food. There’s something for everyone.

But the main reason you need to visit Athens when you visit Greece is the energy and the vibes. The city is electric and full of life. Athens is a city that never sleeps, so there’s always something fun to do somewhere. The beaches are peaceful and full of healing; the hills are beautiful and mountains majestic. The food is delicious, and the people are warm and welcoming. It’s an experience not to be missed.
